Dan Shpak’s job at QU Online might be relatively new, but his presence here in our department is not. Dan worked for QU Online as a student worker while he was completing his degree in Interactive Communications. Fortunately for us, when he graduated in May 2011, he decided to stick around and join our team as a full-time staff member. Dan’s interview below will fill you in on the details of his role at QU Online.

Where are you from originally?

I’ve lived in Oxford, CT my entire life.

What was your major in college and grad school?

I was a Business Administration – Marketing major at Sacred Heart University, and I got my Master’s degree in Interactive Communications at Quinnipiac.

What will you be doing for QU Online?

In short, I develop content for eLearning and Web marketing. It’s a bit more involved than that, but I don’t want to bore anybody with a long description. My official job title is “Web Marketing & eLearning Developer”.

Have you ever taken an online course? What advice would you give to peers or instructors who are involved in online learning?

I took three online courses at Quinnipiac, and a few at Sacred Heart. Some advice I would give instructors is to try to bring a personal feel to the online classroom. Since you don’t quite get that “classroom atmosphere” in online learning, a nice introduction is always a good idea. My colleagues and I are actually working on a series of videos, called “ePortraits” – where we are creating introduction videos for online professors.

What are your hobbies?

Sports. I’m pretty much obsessed.

I also enjoy creating videos, graphics, and web pages. Yes, I’m aware that’s pretty much what I do for work. I love my job.

What is your favorite food?

Either hamburgers or chicken tenders – it’s hard to decide.

What’s your favorite movie?

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

What is your favorite technology or application at the present time? Tell us about it and why you like it so much.

Probably Facebook. It allows me to stay connected to friends and family, no matter where they are.

If you could travel to any place for a vacation, where would you go and why?

I’m not much of a traveler, but I suppose I’d like to go to England one day. Why? I like British accents.
